Prevent Lions Club Dropouts through social media

Lions Club dropouts are the main reason for fall in membership numbers. Every year we see new members enrolled, but we fail to keep them stick to the club. Why is this happening?

We are doing things in our club we used to do 50 years before. We are doing all the things as was done years before, this is more so because most of our members are a senior citizen. We are unable to attract young people. Senior lions members are afraid of using social media, some are just too much sceptical about privacy. Instead of using social media, we mock at present generation. Perhaps this is what is called “Generation Gap”. We need to close this gap. We need to change ! Lions clubs are required to use social media in their daily routine to get members involved in their activity.

Earlier people use to organise a meetup before organising ant event. They sit together somewhere to discuss their events. In Lions Clubs as we organise monthly or fortnightly meetings, here we discuss the agenda, what are the things needed to be done before organising any event. Some of these meetings are general meetings involving all the members while others are board meetings comprising meeting of a board of directors. Here we see most of the time some members or BOD members cannot attend such meetings due to their personal engagements. Sometimes they simply forget. Some of these members, therefore, cannot take part in club events and eventually they feel neglected and start complaining that nobody asked them etc. After a while, these members start feeling that their other personal activities are more important and leave lions club. This is where social media can help grossly.

How social media can help

By using modern day social media tools one can take part in meetings without actually being there.

  1. Hangouts

We may keep one Laptop or a projector in meeting location. Those members who could not attend the meeting can also participate in meeting through Google hangouts, zoom or skype. Google hangout or zoom is a better option as it gives us the facility to talk to multiple people at the same time.

To organise a google hangout all you need is a computer, tablet, or phone that has a camera, speaker, and microphone and a G Suite account. G Suite helped us to hold a video call with up to 25 participants at once (the 10 most active participants are shown at the bottom of the screen), or chat with up to 150 people.

This is done by scheduling a meeting in Google calendar. To schedule a video meeting in Google Calendar— create an event and add your guests in it. A video meeting link is added to a calendar event either by adding one or more guests to the event or by clicking on Add conferencing. After you save the event, a meeting link and dial-in number are added to the event. Just before meeting time a popup appears on users smartphone or computer reminding about meetings.
